Heat sinks are utilized in a variety of electronics and electronic enclosures to transfer the heat generated by the device to either air or a liquid coolant. While there are several types of heat sinks, the most commonly used are straight fin while some applications require pin fin heat sinks.

Although created from a wide range of materials, heat sinks are generally made out of aluminum or copper alloys which have high thermal conductivity properties. Copper has a higher thermal conductivity, but is also a heavier and more expensive material then aluminum.
